Volunteer Work Parties
Nature Consortium hosts volunteer work parties year round several times per week.
Currently we are working Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10am-2pm in the West Duwamish Greenbelt located in West Seattle. Each work party begins with a short informal forest ecology workshop. During the fall and winter we remove invasive species, mulch, and plant native plants and trees in the Seattle's largest remaining forest! Other seasons are devoted to maintenance and monitoring (check out our Blog). Performing artists "play in the woods" during many of our work parties, and include singers, instrumentalists, and dancers.
Please RSVP if you will be attending. Email the Restoration Team at volunteer "at" naturec.org (Please provide Name, Address, Phone number, Email, Age and work party of interest.)
Groups of 10+ can book any date at almost any time. Email Mark Tomkiewicz (buphalo) at buphalo "at" naturec.org or call 206.923.0853
What to Bring
Tools, gloves and refreshments will be provided. Bring a full water bottle. We will have water available for refills. We provide granola bars, but please feel free to bring a lunch as well.
What to Wear
Working out in the elements requires the right apparel. Long pants and closed-toed shoes are required. We highly recommend wearing:
- Boots - or some type of shoe that can get muddy and will keep your feet dry
- Long Pants - and remember if it’s raining jeans get soaked, so waterproof materials
are always better
- Layers Check-out the links below for more info on the reasons for layering:
Wicking Layer - such as polypropylene
Warmth Layers - such as wool or fleece
Outer Layer - wind and water-resistant
- Hat - we lose a lot of heat through our heads, wearing a hat will help to keep you
from getting sick
We currently have three different restoration locations, so it is important to RSVP to confirm where we will be meeting. Click

West Duwamish Greenbelt
Nature Consortium's Urban Forest Restoration Project is committed to the long-term stewardship and restoration of the West Duwamish Greenbelt. The Greenbelt is the largest remaining contiguous forest within Seattle city limits, consisting of 182 acres in park land and another 300 acres in privately owned land. Foxes, red-legged frogs, hawks, and bald eagles are found within the greenbelt, which encompasses the extended forest along the eastern slopes of West Seattle that is visible from I-5. Our main restoration goal is reintroducing native conifer species to the greenbelt, and we also focus on invasive plant removal, site maintenance and environmental education. |

Support for this project comes from King County Water Works Grant, Seattle Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Green Seattle Partnership, Peck Family Foundation, Lucky Seven Foundation, D.V. & Ida McEachern Charitable Trust, Cedar Grove Composting, and Applied Organics.
