The Nature Consortium is a grassroots, community-based organization whose mission is to teach environmental lessons through the creative arts and hands-on conservation projects. We produce a Youth Art Program, an Urban Forest Restoration Project and the Arts~in~Nature Festival.

Keely Barthold -President
As a Seattle native I grew up camping and playing in our wonderful forests, mountains, lakes and rivers. In the last few years I realized I’ve become disconnected with the earth and the Nature Consortium crossed my path at just the right moment. How amazing to have this massive forest right in our city? And the more I learned about the organization while pulling ivy, digging blackberry, mulching, etc. the more I wanted to get involved. All aspects of the work we do appeal to me on so many levels. As a nanny I understand the importance of arts education and teaching the young to care for the earth. As a human I feel compelled to do my part to make it better for the young. I’m excited to be a part of this group!

I was doing some online research one day in May of 2008 when I stumbled across a link for Nature Consortium. The tagline for the link sounded interesting so I clicked through and wound up spending about an hour browsing their site. I was definitely hooked and sold on the Nature Consortium mission. As a visual artist, journalist and media arts educator I knew I needed to find a way to be a part of Nature Consortium. After several emails and visits to the Nature Consortium office to see the operation in person I knew joining the board was a perfect way to contribute to this very important mission. I joined the board of Nature Consortium on July 7, 2008. I am a happy board member and look forward to many years of productive work with the organization.

As a professional gardener, avid plant nerd and restoration ecology enthusiast I enjoy being outside, letting the flora reveal the secrets of the natural world to me and the joy that comes from sharing that experience with others. I’ve found ways to do these things by teaching continuing education classes at South Seattle Community College, managing a resource website for all things restoration, and creating nature-inspired jewelry. I believe in a strong sense of community and am active in my West Seattle neighborhood, Highland Park, which is in the heart of the West Duwamish Greenbelt.  Working with the Nature Consortium has allowed me to channel my passion for nature, education, art and community into action.

Casey Dougherty- Treasurer
We don’t succeed or fail on our own and as good citizens we have an obligation to give back to the communities that support us.  Seattle has supported me throughout my life and as an attorney, MBA, financial planner, and a principal at a local securities broker/dealer, I am deeply grateful.  By fostering healthy and environmentally aware communities, supporting local artists, and enriching natural areas, the Nature Consortium’s goals align with my own.  When I’m not on my sailboat, hiking, biking or otherwise enjoying the Pacific Northwest, look for me at a forest restoration project.  I am happy to be a part of such a dynamic part of our community.

5 years board member; 9+ volunteering with the Nature Consortium.  I have nothing but the utmost enthusiasm and respect for this group - it's the reason I have stayed with it so long!  I am a nurse, currently working in the UW's Dept. of Environmental Health & Safety. It feels so good to be a part of something that is making an impact, not only on our Duwamish greenbelt & forest  restoration, but also touching the lives of kids in our community, and harnessing the talent of our local artists!  Please note: the excellent Annual Arts-in-Nature + Music fest (that started the whole thing rolling in 1998!) is a must-experience event in mid-August! I hope I see you there!

It’s important to give back to the community you live in and West Seattle is a great community.  I joined the board to help out in my neighborhood, as I live just up the hill from the office of Nature Consortium.  I’m looking forward to a great experience with the group.  Everyone I have met exudes amazing energy.  I grew up in the Seattle area and we would go hiking and camping frequently during my childhood.  I’m proud to be part of an organization that is making sure children will know and be able to experience the woods, in the city!

Growing up in Chicago surrounded by corn fields, I decided that when I “grew up” I wanted to live someplace beautiful. The bounty of the Northwest’s natural wonders transformed me from a city girl to a hiker, skier, gardener and conservationist-in-the-making. When I saw all the hard work NC has been doing on the Greenbelt and then met its passionate and dedicated members, I was inspired to join their efforts. In my professional life I am an event planner and I hope to use some of my organizational skills at upcoming NC events to entice others to pick up some gardening tools or paintbrushes and come join us!

It was in 2008 while I was working for an online retail company, when I realized how disconnected I had become.  Software development work can be sterile; driving to an office, sitting in a cubicle and communicating through email are all activities that segregate us from other people and our environments.  I lived in Seattle, but I wasn't a Seattleite.  It was then I decided that I wanted to get involved in my community, connect with my city, its land and its people.  I couldn't have found an organization more aligned with what I wanted and needed, and a better group of people to connect with.

I am an outdoors person who was drawn to the Northwest years ago by the beauty of this place and the friendly, easy-going nature of the people.  Since that time I’ve tromped all over the area and love the fact that right here in our fair city are a number of large forests where you can literally get lost in the middle of city.  I’m excited to be working with the Nature Consortium to help restore the largest urban forest in the City of Seattle.  I’m also excited to participate in the amazing arts program that incorporates environmental aspects at every turn, as it seems important to me that all kids are exposed to the great outdoors.  I also live down the block from the Nature C office and one of the main restoration sites and am happy to be helping out in the local community (and walk there while doing it!).
